Omega-3 Index
Also known as O3I
What it is
The Omega-3 Index measures EPA and DHA as a percentage of red blood cell fatty acids. It reflects long-term omega-3 status.
Why it matters
The Omega-3 Index correlates with cardiovascular, cognitive, and inflammatory outcomes. It is one of the strongest single dietary quality markers.
Range GPLX watches for
GPLX generally targets an Omega-3 Index above 8% in symptomatic patients. Values below 4% are considered high risk.
This educational range is not a personal diagnostic threshold. Your physician interprets your result in context of your full biomarker panel, medications, symptoms, and history.
What abnormal values can suggest
If low
A low Omega-3 Index can suggest low dietary intake of fatty fish or omega-3 supplements.
If high
A high Omega-3 Index is generally favorable.
