What it is
LH is a pituitary hormone that signals the testes to produce testosterone in men and triggers ovulation in women.
Why it matters
LH distinguishes primary from secondary hypogonadism. A low testosterone value with a low LH points to a pituitary or hypothalamic problem; low T with a high LH points to the testes.

What abnormal values can suggest
If low
A low LH value can suggest secondary hypogonadism, pituitary dysfunction, exogenous testosterone use suppressing the axis, or, in women, hypothalamic amenorrhea.
If high
A high LH value can suggest primary testicular failure in men or menopause and PCOS in women.
