Homocysteine

Also known as Hcy

What it is

Homocysteine is an amino acid intermediate in methylation pathways. Elevated levels accompany B-vitamin insufficiency and cardiovascular risk.

Why it matters

Homocysteine is a cross-domain marker: cardiovascular, cognitive, and methylation health all reflect its state. Elevated homocysteine is often correctable with targeted B vitamins.

Range GPLX watches for

GPLX generally targets homocysteine below 8 µmol/L in symptomatic patients. The lab reference is wider.

This educational range is not a personal diagnostic threshold. Your physician interprets your result in context of your full biomarker panel, medications, symptoms, and history.

What abnormal values can suggest

If low

A low homocysteine value is generally favorable.

If high

A high homocysteine value can suggest B12, folate, or B6 insufficiency, methylation issues, kidney disease, or hypothyroidism.
