INFLAMMATION

Ferritin

Also known as Ferritin

What it is

Ferritin is the body's iron storage protein. It also rises with inflammation as an acute-phase reactant.

Why it matters

Ferritin is a dual-purpose marker: iron status and inflammation. Interpretation requires knowing both.

Range GPLX watches for

GPLX watches for ferritin in the mid-range of the lab reference in symptomatic patients. Very low ferritin suggests iron deficiency; very high can suggest inflammation or iron overload.

This educational range is not a personal diagnostic threshold. Your physician interprets your result in context of your full biomarker panel, medications, symptoms, and history.

What abnormal values can suggest

If low

A low ferritin value strongly suggests iron deficiency, even before anemia develops.

If high

A high ferritin value can suggest inflammation, liver disease, alcohol use, iron overload (hemochromatosis), or metabolic dysfunction.
