What it is
PSA is a protein produced by the prostate gland. Blood levels are measured to screen for prostate conditions in men.
Why it matters
PSA is a required safety marker before and during testosterone therapy. It also screens for benign prostate enlargement, prostatitis, and prostate cancer.

What abnormal values can suggest
If low
A low PSA value is generally reassuring.
If high
A high PSA value can suggest prostate enlargement, prostatitis, urinary tract infection, or prostate cancer. Elevated PSA requires evaluation before androgen therapy.
